LA Moye Prison

Work continues apace on the New Visitor and Staff Facilities Building at La Moye Prison.

AC Mauger commenced construction in May 2011 and the centre is scheduled to open in May 2012 but at just over halfway into the project, the build is running ahead of schedule in its 55 week contract.

Once completed, the centre will provide much needed space for staff and visitors at the prison.

The New Visitor & Staff Facilities Building was designed by UK based architects Taylor Young and the three floor facility is being constructed using a traditional steel frame.  Work to the exterior of the building has included a combination of treatments, such as Forticrete blockwork, zinc cladding and stonework.  This also includes the installation of ballistic standard glazed units.

As for the internal work of the building, this has included the construction of traditional internal walls, using a combination of blockwork and metal stud partitions for the operation.  During the build security measures have been introduced, which have included secure standard internal doors and screens; a necessity for the type of building that it is.  The remainder of the internal finishes of the centre will include plaster, paint, vinyl, carpet as well as the implementation of furniture.  The project also includes some associated external hard and soft landscape work.

Working around a prison has posed a number of key concerns due to the nature of HMP La Moye’s daily operations.  It also meant that extra precautions were in place for the AC Mauger Construction team, whilst they were working at the site.

AC Mauger Construction Manager Gary Peat said: “Logistically the site is challenging due to the limited amount of space available. As you would expect, given its location, the security protocol is also extremely stringent.”
